NC Prevent CLABSI: Targeting Zero

Published studies to-date document that central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) may result in the following untoward outcomes annually, nation-wide:1

  • 84,551 - 203,916 potentially preventable infections
  • 10,426 - 25,145 potentially preventable deaths
  • $1.7 - 21.4 billion potentially avoidable costs

These dangerous and costly infections may be prevented through consistent application of known evidence-based practices.2 The challenges presented in consistently applying and sustaining these best practices has been recognized. Without the strong cultural attributes of teamwork and communication, such strategies may be implemented but will not be sustained over time and hence, outcomes will not remain at the level required. Recent science is beginning to yield a growing body of evidence linking teamwork, communication, and a culture focused on safety with better patient outcomes.3 Therefore, the core problem that must be addressed is the culture of safety within a unit in order to successfully implement and then sustain best practices for the best outcomes.

    Overview

North Carolina Healthcare facilities will have the opportunity to participate in a statewide collaborative, designed to reduce CLABSI rates with sustainment, by implementing core, evidence-based interventions. This collaborative will take place August 2011 through June 2013. Please see the collaborative flyer for more information. Healthcare facilities interested in joining the collaborative, may also contact the Project Manager, Latoshua LeGrant, at llegrant@ncha.org or 919-677-4134.

    Learning Objectives

    Each participating facility will:

    • Learn how to apply the CUSP program, CLIP, and CLABSI reduction tools.
    • Receive tools for measuring CLABSI and safety culture in their facility.
    • Receive ongoing support through:
      • In-person Learning Sessions
      • Collaborative Content and Coaching Calls
      • Individual Team Coaching
    • Have access to expert faculty
